Philly:The news regarding Iverson yesterday wasn't good, but wasn't as bad as people thought. Results of an MRI exam showed a sprained and bruised right foot that will keep Iverson sidelined for at least four games.
Officially, the Sixers said that Iverson would be out for tonight's game against Toronto at the Wachovia Center and that he was doubtful for the coming trip to the West Coast, in which the Sixers will play three games in four days beginning Thursday in Seattle.
Iverson was injured with 1.5 seconds left in the first half of the game against the Grizzlies. He launched a 20-footer from the corner near the Sixers' bench and his momentum carried him over the end line, where he stepped back to see whether the shot was going in and stumbled on the foot of a ball boy seated nearby.
Iverson did not play in the second half. He left the arena wearing a protective boot on his right foot.
Sixers coach Maurice Cheeks, who met with reporters at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine before the results of Iverson's MRI exam were known, said: "I'm hoping it's not as bad as we all thought. I'm hoping it's just a sprain."
The injury left the Sixers shorthanded in the backcourt, at least until Kevin Ollie returns from his sprained right ankle. Ollie, who has missed the last two games, didn't practice yesterday but did some running. He will be evaluated further today.
Cheeks said John Salmons would probably start in Iverson's place tonight.
