Knicks assistant coach Herb Williams is on the Indiana Pacers' list of candidates to replace Rick Carlisle as head coach.
Carlisle was fired yesterday after the Pacers posted a 35-47 record, their worst season since 1988-89. Indiana is also said to be interested in former Pacer players Sam Mitchell and Mark Jackson.
Williams is a former first-round pick of Indiana's back in 1981 and has limited head coaching experience. He went 16-27 after replacing Lenny Wilkens as Knicks head coach on Jan. 22, 2005. He also coached the Knicks to a victory in one game a year earlier, on the day the Knicks fired Don Chaney.
Williams returned to being an assistant coach after the Knicks hired Larry Brown. At Brown's introductory press conference, both Garden chairman James Dolan and Isiah Thomas hinted that when Brown was finished coaching Williams would be his successor. However, after the Knicks fired Brown last June, Dolan decided to install Thomas as coach.
Williams is the only Knicks coach with ties to the organization. If he leaves, there is a possibility that Thomas could reach out to Patrick Ewing, who is interested in rejoining the team.
