On the eve of another Phoenix game, Stephon Marbury was not bolting yesterday, just boasting. Despite their nightmare November, Marbury said the Knicks are still on track for the playoffs.
“After all the hoopla, we’ve won three of the last four,” Marbury said. “Normally when that happens, you’re getting praised.
“At the end of the season, we’ll be where we want to be.”
Marbury has a hurt shoulder, but expects to play tonight vs. his nemesis Steve Nash and probably receive more Garden jeers. Last month, Marbury’s hurt feelings after Isiah Thomas told him he was being benched for Mardy Collins forced him to miss the Phoenix game as he flew home, with nudging from the Knicks president/coach.
Marbury won’t add more details about the Phoenix incident because he’s still awaiting word on whether will be fined for missing the game. A source said the Knicks have not decided whether to collect the $195,000 for missing the game. Marbury has said privately if fans knew the real story of what happened, they wouldn’t be booing him.
A Marbury confidant told The Post recently Thomas ordered Marbury to leave town if he didn’t like the move. A series of Marbury text messages sent to The Post during that time seem to confirm the interpretation that Thomas initiated Marbury’s departure. Marbury wrote, in part, “I would never leave my team on my own. He said that I could go home. You have to ask him why he let me go.”
The losing and the well-publicized feud has caused boos at home for both and an uncertain future for each as a Knick. “Thank God,” Thomas said when reminded November was over.
