NEW YORK -- The Knicks’ Stephon Marbury said he received permission from head coach Isiah Thomas to leave the team, contradicting reports that the star guard left because he was upset at learning he would not be in the starting lineup Tuesday night.
Marbury missed the Knicks shoot-around Tuesday in Phoenix.
"I have one thing to say, and that's I got permission to leave. I would never leave my team on my own," Marbury said to WNBC's Bruce Beck.
"It was said that I just left, which was not the truth," Marbury said. "I got permission from Isiah."
Thomas said he's uncertain whether the guard will show up for Tuesday’s game against the Suns.
When asked why Marbury went missing, Thomas called it an "in-house matter" that will remain in house.
