Report: Few Knicks at workouts

Isiah Thomas asked. Only four Knicks responded.

So much for the Knicks embracing Larry Brown's replacement.

Thomas sent letters to Knicks players asking that they attend informal workouts in New York the day after Labor Day. However, only four showed up, a team source told the New York Daily News.

In a report Tuesday, the paper reported that Channing Frye, David Lee and two other unnamed players arrived the day after the holiday; the majority of the team arrived last week.

When Thomas was named to replace Brown as coach, he was given one year to turn around last season's 23-59 team to the point that it shows "significant progress towards its goal of eventually becoming an NBA championship team."

On Monday, Thomas admitted "there are going to be some tough times" ahead. And while the poor attendance at the workouts doesn't mean the team is defying the coach, it's not a good start.

"It's a tough league. It's a very unforgiving league as we've seen the last couple of years," Thomas told the paper. "When you're down people kick you."

"The most important thing is that we come together as a unit and we think and act like one."

At the team's first official practice Tuesday, Steve Francis provided hope the Knicks are buying into Thomas' plan of building camaraderie and confidence between players.

"In one game this year we'll play more [together] than we did all of last season," Francis told the paper.

new season, old story....

Knicks need a face lifting. if its not obvious right now, then I don´t know when is....

there is no dedication, no pride, nothing. After such a horrendous season you would expect thm to show up in july and work their butt off. instead they refuse a work out, what can you say.....

maybe afterall Larry Brown wasn´t that bad of a coach...

I dunno what to say except I guess some things never change.....

They better wake up or else it won't only be Isiah losing his job.

I dont see this as something big, but most of these guys should show up. They have to show that they care and dont want to get kicked around and stomped on all year on the court and in the papers. At a certain point, no matter what a player says, he cares what people say. No matter how big or how little, he still cares. I dont find it suprising at all that it was mostly the rookies from last year who showed up. Again, I dont take this as a huge deal, but it should be noted.

ya its not a big issue but still...

the players know how much money the Knicks invest. I mean 130 mio. salary + 60-70 mio luxery tax makes it 200 mio. salary every year.

after a DISASTEROUS season where they finish 23-59 they should feel guilty and actually show that at least its not a question of effort. the sad point is it is. they have talent, nobody can deny they have playoff talent but they don´t have "it". Isiah has a group of individuals but they have no ambitions.

I mean Jerome James, Starbury, Francis, Q, Crawford, ...

show me some WINNERS. show me some PROFESSIONALS, some LEADERS. this team has a character issue. when you are 40 games beyond the 0.500 mark with that talent this team has a big issue.

Brown couldn´t handle this team and made terrible decisions. the same way every other coach will have trouble to get it going. I would trade some talent for some hustle.
