Erica Hahn would depart from Grey's Anatomy.

On November 3, 2008, Entertainment Weekly's Michael Ausiello reported that Erica Hahn Grey's Anatomy DVD would depart from Grey's Anatomy on November 6. Rhimes stated that: "Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke's character would sustain in the long run." E! Online's Kristin Dos Santos claimed that Smith's dismissal from the show was enforced by the ABC network, as part of an attempt to "de-gay" Grey's Anatomy. She revealed that as well as writing out Erica, Grey's Anatomy newcomer Melissa George Two and a Half Men DVD would no longer be playing a bisexual character as announced. Brooke Smith, interviewed by Michael Ausiello, stated that: "I was very excited when they told me that Erica and Callie were going to have this relationship. And I really hoped we were going to show what happens when two women fall in love and that they were going to treat it like any heterosexual couple on TV.Weeds DVD And so I was surprised and disappointed when they just suddenly told me that they couldn't write for my character anymore. it was very sudden." On May 27, 2009, E! Online's Marc Malkin reported that Knight would not be returning for season six of Grey's Anatomy. Knight's reported unhappiness with the development and lack of screen time of his character, George, led him to request a release from his contract in December 2008. There had been fan-speculation that another actor True Blood DVD would assume the role due to the massive facial injuries George suffered in the season five finale, but New York Daily News' staff writer Patty Lee stated that "his character, Dr. George O'Malley, is dead." Rhimes stated that the lack of George during season five was deliberate, to increase the audience's shock at his critical injury in the finale, and praised Knight as "an incredibly talented actor". On June 17, 2009 it was confirmed that Knight Gossip Girl DVD was officially released from contract.
